Monday Afternoon

As Barbara said I was having internet connection problem the other day and then I did not want to post last night while everyone was preparing for the storm and now while everyone is waiting for the storm but a lot of people have been emailing me and asking me and my brother Seamus why I have not posted so here it is.

MikeyD had a good night Friday night with Cookie she is great with him she bought him a couple of no spill cups so he can have some water himself he was showing people how they worked. Cookie thank you so much for staying with MikeyD for us we really appreciate it.

Saturday afternoon he started getting stomach pains and did not want to eat anything, he was real happy to see the Provenzano’s and Ryan Bragg even though he was uncomfortable I could see the difference that the company made him feel much better, I knew he was not feeling good when Leon went out and bought Pizza and soda for everyone and he would not even have a piece of a slice and he loves pizza. While Leon went to get the food with Ciara and Ainsley. Marla, Jonathan and Ryan  got to go to OT with MikeyD   I even had the boys to join in and help move his legs around. Saturday night after Ciara, Ainsley, Will and Harris left he had real bad pain in his stomach and I was up with him all night trying to make him comfortable I had to call the resident doctor to come in and see him around 6 AM Sunday morning. He could not eat any breakfast and was getting all his medicine which I knew would make his stomach worse. He could not eat any lunch either. He had a nice surprise when Tracey Tucci and Barbara Amodeo walked in with Paul, Dominick and Anthony even though he had not eaten since Saturday at noon and was uncomfortable it made his day he had a big smile when he seen them and it really changed his whole afternoon he had a lot of fun with everyone especially Tracey and Barbara they had him belly laughing again. Barbara Cassin sent me my favorite brownies and he even ate a little piece of the brownie the first bit of food since Saturday at noon. You may not see it but we do when you guys come to visit he is 100 times better than when he is just by himself with us laying around the hospital. I think he feels more comfortable and not so deserted wondering where he is and if he will ever get out. I know that your company will help him to ten fold in his recovery.

We would like to thank you so much from coming to see MikeyD this weekend it means a lot to him and  to us.

Mikeyd had another rough night in pain last night and Moya was up all night with again last night. They just took him down to do some X-Rays to see if they can find out what is causing him all the pain it is so hard to watch and not be able to do anything for him. I hope they find something that will give him some relief soon.it is bad enough to be laying around with two casts on your legs and not be able to tell anyone how you are really feeling. We will hope and pray that all of you and you families are safe during this storm.

Friday Afternoon

MikeyD is sleeping better since they changed his medication on Monday Thank God.
he had a good night sleep on Tuesday  and Wednesday night he still wakes up every couple of hours for water and does not sleep through the night but at least he is getting a couple hours of sleep a night.
they say that sleep is the best thing for a brain injury we really believe that all your prayers are working. The Dr. is talking about injecting MikeyD with Botox shots to help relive the muscle spasms that he is getting and are causing him pain we hope they work. Cookie is going to stay with MikeyD tonight, the girls are going to stay with Aunt Gail and Moya and I are going to go out to dinner. We also have my Mom sister Diane, Jean Marie and other family members and friends offering to stay a night here and there with MikeyD which is great we will work out a schedule for that. The support from all of you on the blog in the many different ways is greatly appreciated by my whole family. We cannot thank you all enough for posting all your kind words of love and support for MikeyD we are so happy to see the post from all of you on how you check the blog morning and night.
it was great to see the post from the Tucci family and read how happy Paul and Dominick were happy to see MikeyD smiling I was happy to see Paul and Dominick smiling. I know MikeyD was happy to see them. When they came on Sunday MikeyD was not the same as he was on Saturday due to the fact that he did not sleep on Saturday night at all so I thought they did not enjoy the visit I was happy that they all enjoyed the visit with MikeyD. Makes us all happy to see the post from Barbara Cassin that she was driving out of town and seen all the Green ribbons. It is great to see that Dawn Gervase said that her family will add this prayer to the list of prayers they already say for MikeyD along with the post from Donna McCann and all the rest of you offering help and support.   We are looking forward to the day  that MikeyD can say to Peggy Dunne thank you so much for being my prayer warrior . we would like to thank all of you for your prayers and support.
Please pray that MikeyD will speak soon again one day.
If you can visit MikeyD it will be greatly appreciated it. I do agree with the Dr. that familiarity is the best thing for him right now. If you are planning to come see him ask the kids to think of questions that can be answered yes or no. Also tell him you have a lot homework even if you don’t then ask him if he has any homework.(it will make him smile)
You can also remind him of stories of thing that happened in the past.
Visiting hours are from 1 in the afternoon to 8:30 PM at night. Weekends are good and if anyone can make it after school during the week would be great as it is very quiet for him during the week.

Wednesday Night

MikeyD finally had a good night sleep last night. He woke up a few times for a glass of water and went back to sleep. He did not eat well today he got up at six AM and did not want to eat anything he took all his medicine on an empty stomach he gets about eleven different things in the morning and a gain a few times a day. I did get him to eat a yogurt late morning and all he had for lunch was a small grilled cheese sandwich. He had a full busy day of PT,OT and speech therapy for diner he had Chicken Parm he ate about half and was not able to hold onto it probably not a good idea. A lot of you have been asking me why he is in cast on both his legs so I will answer it now. Whenever someone has a traumatic brain injury you get what is called muscle tone where you muscles tighten up and lock you lose control of your muscles they tighten up and you also get muscle spasms.  They take your ankles and stretch the Achilles and the muscles in your legs and hold it they then cast you in that position for a week. Next week they take the cast off and pull your ankles back further and stretch it some more and cast your legs again this goes on for three weeks. It is like you were stretching before a work out and you go into a position to stretch for a few minutes and instead you kept the stretch in that position for a week. Due to the TBI MikeyD cannot even sit up without someone or a wheelchair holding him in a position he is either laying down or sitting in a wheelchair and when he is in the wheelchair he has to be tied in with a seat belt and across his chest. We will keep the blog going a lot of people called and emailed me about how they go to it every morning and night and how they share it with their family also the power of prayer for healing MikeyD  that is received from it is awesome. Tonight Brian Hill came to see MikeyD after work tonight and while he was there he witnessed MikeyD battling a bout of pain he was moaning pretty loud before Brian left we stood and prayed over MikeyD and Brian witnessed him bless himself and then he folded his hands in prayer even though he has a hard time keeping his left hand open it was great!

Tuesday Night

I am sitting on the chair next to MikeyD's bed he just fell asleep and as always no one knows for how long then the nurse comes in at all hours to take blood pressure etc so if she does not wake  up on his own someone else will wake him up. so before I lay  down on the COT  for whatever rest I can get I will do the blog now. After a tough weekend we spoke with the doctor on Monday and let him know that MikeyD was not sleeping at all and he was having major stomach problems. When someone has a Traumatic Brain Injury  they give you medicine to try and stimulate the brain and they cannot give you heavy duty sleeping medication with TBI so it is a rough balance. The Doctor did lower the brain medicine and he is not getting it in the night time anymore he only gets it in the morning before this it was morning and night. So far so good he did get some sleep last night and is sleeping right now. I hope I fall asleep before I hear the fingers snapping. He seems much better today after getting some sleep and they gave him more medicine for the stomach problems. Today MikeyD got two new cast put on his legs.When everything settled down tonight and the Sullivan's left I took him out of the wheelchair and put him in the bed I sat in the chair next to the bed I was showing him pictures and he started pointing to the cast on his right leg and he wanted me to take it off I said no I can't he started acting like he had pain so I checked the circulation in his toes and it was fine blood was coming back quick it was just him being MikeyD and messing with me trying to get me to take them off. The cast are a three week setback from really moving forward. I was really thinking about shutting the blog down and not posting anymore after the weekend that we had I figured Monday would be my last post. Then today a couple of things happened a lot of people that cannot post on the site send emails directly to me with their post. I received a very powerful email from a friend about how his life was changed by MikeyD  and how he starts his day by going to the blog first thing every morning.

I receive emails and phone calls from doctors and nurses telling me how they were inspired by MikeyD and how much they have become attached to him and follow him on the blog.People tell me they had lost their faith and are now praying because of MikeyD. Then I went to the blog tonight to read the post and when I open the post from people it shows me the last post it was from Ken Liotti and he was talking about how many lives that MikeyD  has changed and how he has made people more caring , forgiving and opened their hearts. Then I read all the post from Sarah one of MikeyD’s nurses from CHOP, Peggy, Rooney’s in Dallas, Barbara, Regina and all the rest of you and I said  we need to post for another day. The blog gets over 3000 hits a day For a little boy who cannot talk he sure is speaking a Big message to a lot of people!

Monday Afternoon

It has been all downhill since Saturday night after the Company left. I would like to apologize to anyone who came to see MikeyD on Sunday he was not the same as he was Saturday, we had a rough night he only slept for about an hour on Saturday night and then he was up all night after that. He was very thirsty and kept drinking water he drank 8 full glasses through a straw while I held the glass it takes a while to do that. I tried lying on the cot  next to him but he kept snapping his fingers and he was really wired all night suffering with muscle spasms and having stomach problems so I just stood over him all night. He went through the day on Sunday as best he could and tried to smile for everyone I carried him in and out of bed a bunch of times to sit in his wheelchair for the company but I could tell he was in pain one time I laid him back in the bed and  I hit his stitches on his chest pretty hard and he was crying you would not believe how bad I felt. Sunday night around 5:30 he fell asleep for about an hour or so while everyone was there he woke up after that and has been awake ever since and has been in pain and discomfort with stomach problems he keeps going to the bathroom and has to be changed constantly he is all sore now. He missed therapy this morning because he is so sick he has had only a total of about 4 hours sleep since Friday night and has hardly eaten anything. Moya and I are both getting so tired and depressed at least if he could talk he would be able to tell us how he feels. I do not know how much longer we can watch this little 12 year old boy suffer like this. It is getting much worse instead of better.

Worry eats away at my heart and anxiety chases any chance for rest. I pray I say my rosary I contemplate your image. My prayer is weak but I know your heart is full of tenderness and you understand my distraction.

Saturday Night

I am sitting on the chair next to MikeyD's bed the company just left and he is sound asleep. How long will he sleep no one knows he may wake up ready to go for the night in a few minutes. He did not sleep for two days before this .

I never knew how happy you could make a little kid by cutting a cast that was too tight off his leg.

he is hanging out with a cast on his right leg and one air-Jordan high top basketball sneaker on his left foot since Thursday night and is fine with it.

MikeyD had a great day Friday he was much more comfortable than he was on Wednesday and Thursday. Friday night Chris and Jen came up to visit MikeyD and he had a blast with them he really likes the way Chris dances that got the belly laugh going then he had a good time with Jen going over some sign language. He had fun thumb wrestling with them. Today was another real good day for MikeyD because of all the company he had it started early in the day and just ended tonight the Hills left shortly before the Hilfikers and Uncle Seamus who just left, one of the nurses came up to me and said he is having the best day I have seen yet you could see the smile on his face all day because off all the company the Dr. at CHOP was right the best thing for him is to have a bunch of people he knows friends and relatives around him. he was smiling, laughing and joking all day. Anyone that has been hear to visit MikeyD will tell you for a kid that can’t talk he sure can communicate and have a good sense of humor. He even made his sisters Julia and Ciara think that they made him cry the other day and then he started laughing .Thank you for coming to visit MikeyD today and please keep the company coming the more the better. I really think that hanging out in the family room with a bunch of friends like he did today will help him to get his voice back one day. Thank you God for giving MikeyD two pain free  days with family and friends.

Thursday Night

It was a long rough day today.

after I called the President of the hospital yesterday I wrote a letter about how unhappy we were and that we were thinking about moving MikeyD out of there she asked me to give them another chance.

I told her  I would like to have a meeting and get some answers as to why MikeyD was casted when he was walking when he came in usually it is the opposite I told her no one could answer my questions, we set up a meeting and went over what we expected I sat down in one of the nicest conference rooms on top of the hospital with the top people and told them why I was so mad and what I expected from here on forward, I then met with the therapists and went over all the details. All day today everyone was so responsive and helpful,

tonight Cookie Paczos came to visit in case you don't know  who Cookie is she is our neighbor and very close friend more like family than a friend she has known little MikeyD since he was born and is very close to him. When she first got there he was fine after a little while he was in extreme pain again someone said we will take the cast off tomorrow and have it checked out Cookie started yelling tomorrow is too late. Then the nurse came and said do you want MikeyD to have his pain killer now or wait until later because Moya wanted him to have it later so he would sleep better. Cookie had to go to the bathroom  when Cookie was gone the great nurse Margaret came in again and said to you want me to give him his pain medicine now and I said no please hold off as soon as Cookie gets back I am going to cut this cast off and she said are you really  going to do that and I said yes I am she smiled and said  I will help you she got her tool out and by the time Cookie came back we were cutting off the cast Cookie joined in right away we were holding his leg up and cutting off the cast before you knew it we were having a cast cutting party. Then the charge nurse came in to see if Margaret could work over time tomorrow and she said what are you doing and she said Dad wanted to cut the cast off and I am helping him then the charge nurse joined in as soon as we got it off the head nurse Connie said you got this just in time what happened was it was too  tight and was cutting off his circulation had we not cut the cast off  he would have had some major problems. I am really mad at myself for not taking that cast off on Wednesday when I knew I should of I little my little boy suffer for more than another day by not doing it.
