Sunday Night

Sorry that the post are a little bit off. Friday night I posted from the hospital as I usually do and the WI-FI was off so it did not show up until Saturday morning, I then posted Saturday afternoon with my daughters as soon as we found out MikeyD did not have any blood clots in his right arm,

Saturday was a very quiet day with no visitors except for our good friend Kate who came Saturday morning to do us a favor and drive our daughters down and she stopped in for a little bit to see MikeyD she had to be back in the New York city that afternoon. Saturday afternoon as I was with Dr.Bonney and he was going over the details of the surgery that they are going to do on MikeyD he explained the whole procedure the good the bad and the ugly he is a great guy and spent a lot of time with me and actually showed me on the screen exactly what will happen he shared the details off all the risk with me of what could happen and how everything works while he was explaining everything to me someone had sent me a text I did not check it right away. When he was done and we were talking he told me that since he has not spoken in 23 days the best thing for MikeyD right now is familiarity people and things he knew in the past would be great for him. When I checked the text it was from our good friends and neighbors the Sullivan's Rich said thinking about coming today do you want the company? No one was there and we really needed the company I thought he just meant Donna and himself I responded that would be great can Mike and Emma come he said that was the plan. MikeyD and Mike Sully are best friends Emma Julia and Ciara are all good friends we have been on vacations together and the kids had sleep overs etc,

Saturday night we had a great visit Mike Sully came in and I put his hand in MikeyD's hand and although no words were spoken a lot of communication was going on you could tell how Happy Mikeyd was to see Sully yet how sad he was that he could not speak to him he tried to talk you could see it in his face he shook his hand for about 10 minutes after things settled down the girls all sat on the couch in his room and MikeyD looked around at everyone Mr. Sullivan said MikeyD is Emma a pain in the butt MikeyD looked over at her and smiled shook his head yes then he asked is Sully a pain in the butt and MikeyD shook his head no everyone in the room started laughing and then MikeyD started laughing.

(he is in there somewhere) just waiting to come out. I cannot thank the Sullivan’s enough it was the perfect visit at the perfect time. Poor MikeyD had a restless night that night after they left as he is having tonight. Today was a busy day for him with therapy and then a bunch of my family came to visit he always played with and took care of his little 2 year old cousin Seamus it was as hard on little Seamus as it was MikeyD today when Seamus could not understand why MikeyD would not talk to him it broke my heart. It has been 23 long days since he has spoken to any of us yet he hears all of us and understands what we are saying I pray to God every day that he will speak to us real soon it seems like 23 long years. Dr.Bonney told me that the surgery is tentatively scheduled for this Tuesday as soon as I know for sure I will let everyone know.he will then be put in a paralytic state for 5 days on medication so he does not move around too much and break the wires just another major step backward after that I hope we can move forward.If the Surgery is Tuesday maybe we all can say some exra prayers for him on Tuesday,

This Friday night October 5^th  7:30 PM  at St. Mary’s will be the healing mass for MikeyD if you and your family can make it  my family would greatly appreciate it.

Saturday Afternoon

Great news No Blood clots in MikeyD's right arm all the test’s came back good. It was just swelling from the PIC line that was put in the right arm. Thank God. He is having a comfortable day so far the medicine is working.

MikeyD had speech therapy and had 4 spoons of chocolate ice cream and many ice chips. He is starting to chew them now which is awesome. The speech therapist asked him to blow his mother a kiss he lifted his head up and blew her a big kiss (lips only) !!! Right now he has finished PT and is having OT he is sitting in the tilt chair and she is working with him as we type.

 Now my daughters Julia and Ciara would like to post below for everyone.

First I would like to thank everyone for the dinner’s. I have no idea which family sends what every night but Ciara and I have enjoyed every one of them and it is such a great help. Since we don’t usually know who is sending us what we want to think of a better way to thank everyone but I figured the blog was the easiest way to get it out there. Not only the dinners but the littlest things like thoughts and prayers that everyone has been sending out really do keep my entire family going. We feel like a simple thank you is not enough. I would also like to thank Sam Provenzano, Hunter Rotondo, and Mrs. Mahoney for helping me with the bracelets in school! It seems like such a simple task but it really is a big help! To my Aunt Jean Marie and Aunt Diane who without them we could not accomplish the bracelets, I don’t know how to thank you enough. You’ve taken such good care of us and these bracelets came out amazing. Thank you so much to Uncle John, Aunt Lynn, Uncle Seamus and Aunt Lauren for taking time out of your busy schedules to stay overnight at the house with us while mom and dad stay overnight at the hospital with our little brother Mighty MikeyD. Mrs. Dunne we can’t even begin to express my thank you’ s for your prayers and positive energy every day! There are so many people I would like to thank right now and I cannot get to them all tonight but just know how much we really do appreciate everything that everyone has been doing for us!

Friday Night

Here we go again one step forward and two steps back.

Today way not a good day for Mighty MikeyD.

I feel like maybe from now on I should only update the blog on good days.

MikeyD started out the morning in a lot of pain settled for a few hours during the day and by late afternoon was in real bad pain again with cold sweats.

Hey Regina he did not want any chocolate  ice cream today unfortunately maybe tomorrow. He did have a few ice chips.

around 8 o'clock tonight I noticed that  his right arm was very swollen as he was moaning in pain.

I asked him if his right arm hurt and he nodded yes I then went and got the nurse and asked her to come in and look at it she agreed that it was swollen and she went to get the doctor the doctor said it was swollen and ordered an ultra sound to see if it could more blood clots the IV was moved from his left arm to his right because of the clots in the left arm from the IV.

I hope and pray it is not more blood  clots we will know sometime tomorrow.
I also hope and Pray that he will be able to speak to us real soon so he can at least tell us where all the pain is coming from Mikeyd please talk to me.

The worst thing now is when he wakes up and tries to move his arm or his hands and can’t he get very upset and you can see the scared look on his face as he looks down at his arms and tries to figure out why they are not moving.

I hope and pray that tomorrow is a better day !!!

Thursday Night

Big difference in one day !!!

Mighty MikeyD had a much better day today finally something good to report.

After last night I was thinking of shutting down this blog and the care page even though he has over 3000 visits a day on this blog !!!

Early this morning a pain management team of 3 doctors came into to see MikeyD and they worked their magic they did an assessment of the situation and changed all of his medicine and the times of day instead of every 4 hours they are giving it to him every 2 hours and different medicine with different doses all our thanks to one nurse and Dr.Vetter.

My auntie Bridie and uncle Mattie came to visit MikeyD and Moya said can you give them a smile and he did he gave them a big smile. Then Bob McCann came to visit again and Moya said hey Mikeyd Bob is here to see you can give him a smile not only did he give Bob a big smile but he gave him a thumbs up as if to say Thank you my man for being there for me.it has been 21 days since he has spoken he never said much when he could speak but I promise you if he could speak he would say thank you rather than a thumbs up he would give you both. I long for the day when this Little boy of little words will speak to us again. I hope I have to ask him to stop talking one day soon !!!

Then speech therapy came in and since he does not like Blueberry Ice pops Lauren gave him chocolate ice cream he had a few spoons and liked it we hope Regina is listening and has a comment we miss her. I had an appointment today I am interviewing rehabilitation Hospitals the next step for MikeyD today I visited The Children’s Specialized Hospital in New Brunswick tomorrow and Monday I have appointments at different places. I would appreciate if anyone of you knows of one of the best rehabilitation hospitals for traumatic brain injuries in the USA I do not care if it is in California a lot of people are telling me you need to find a place close to home I just want to find the best place possible for my son if it is in Kansas we will go to Kansas maybe you know someone who knows someone who has experienced the need and can let me know please post or email me I will be glad to hear from you and consider any recommendations. I hope and pray that MikeyD has another day tomorrow like today.

Wednesday Night

I only wish I had better news MikeyD had the roughest day yet. they took him off Fentanyl last night and he was in really bad shape today with all kinds of pain even though he is still getting Morphine. When OT came in this morning and sat him in the chair he was bent over moaning with pain I asked him if his tummy hurt and he nodded yes you could see the pain on his face. I also asked him if he had pain in his right arm I touched it when I asked him and he nodded no I then asked him if he had pain in his Left arm I touched it and he nodded yes. I spoke to one of the doctors this morning and they said because he was down for so long he lost all the blood in his stomach and  now that they are trying to give him IV feeding that his stomach is damaged like his kidney and liver and that will cause a lot of pain. He was clenched up in pain all day, I took the girls for dinner tonight and when we came back he was soaking wet in a cold sweat and in a lot of Pain. one of the nurses who was taking care of MikeyD last week stopped into see him on her own time after work tonight she got very upset when she seen how he was and said I am going to get a doctor when she went to get a doctor MikeyD's Cardiologist stopped in at 8:40 on her way home just to say good night and check in on us as she does every night she is a great person she was upset and said she was going to call in Pain Management I hope they can do something. We hope and pray that tomorrow is a better day for Little MikeyD.

Tuesday Night

we got notice from the doctors tonight that the surgery will not be done tomorrow,
One step forward and two steps back.
Julia and Ciara came down tonight to be here with their brother Mighty Mike after the surgery tomorrow as well because they are off school. The doctors think it will now be better to wait due to the blood clots and not being able to use blood thinners. we do not have a date yet for when they will be doing the surgery  it will be at least a week. As soon as we do know we will let everyone know. MikeyD was in pain this weekend and tonight and since he cannot speak and tell us where the pain is just makes it harder for everyone at first the doctors thought that it was from starting the IV nutrition and causing pain in the stomach. it looks like right now the pain is coming from the blood clots in his left arm. I only wish he could speak so we at least would know where the pain is coming from. I think Regina was right he does not like the flavor of the Ice Pop he told the speech therapist today that he did not want the Ice Pop by nodding no. I thought we were on to something good. The day for us was in preparation for his surgery tomorrow that is not going to be I wish it was so we can all move on to the next step.

I want to share this prayer with all of you maybe if we say it together in force it will help bring quicker healing just change my child is Ill to MikeyD or Mighty Mike (we may have to change his name)

Prayer to Saint Anne for a Sick Child

Saint Anne I cry out to you in my distress. My Child is ill!

I thought I had everything under control, but now this unexpected illness has suddenly happened.

In faith ,in the midst of my despair and misery, I come to you and I beg you to ease my worry and anxiety. Obtain for me from your grandson Jesus the healing of my child.

Worry eats away at my heart and anxiety chases any chance for rest. I pray I say my rosary I contemplate your image. My prayer is weak but I know your heart is full of tenderness and you understand my distraction.

Heal my child  soothe my child, console my child and bless my child keep each of us under your protection and guide us to our good Jesus our God Jesus he will understand me as he understood the centurion whose child was suffering painfully he will know how to help I will rest in his Mercy Amen.

Monday Night

we spoke to the doctors today they are going ahead with the surgery on Wednesday morning even though he has the blood clots in his left arm in spite of the fact that  I am worried I do have faith in all the doctors, nurses and the rest of the medical staff here at CHOP they are by far the best. MikeyD had another busy day of therapy when Speech therapy came in today and asked him if he wanted an Ice-Pop unfortunately  he nodded  no I was very surprised because he enjoyed that little taste so much yesterday. The doctors think the pain he has for the past few days could be from the feed they started him on a few days ago this was being fed through a feeding tube and was the first feed he had since being in the hospital so they turned it off for now I hope that is it. I cannot imagine how weak and hungry this little boy must be he used to eat 4 cheeseburgers at one sitting. When PT came in today to put him in the tilt chair he did stand up for a minute weight bearing on his own two feet while she held him in her arms and asked him if he wanted to dance another small major step. All of us hope and pray that he will speak to us soon I long to hear his voice and have him be able to tell us what he is feeling so we might be able to make him more comfortable. Just so everyone know his sisters Julia and Ciara along with a few of his cousins Erin, Brendan, Bridget, Liam and Charlie designed and ordered Mighty Mike bracelets with his favorite colors red and blue with Mighty Mike in white they are going around Middletown schools selling them for $1.00 a piece this was all done by them on their own and it is being done as charity any money that they make from the sale of the bracelets is being donated to the Ronald Mc Donald House.

Sunday Night

Little mikeyD had a better day today overall. He started the morning feeling better than he did yesterday. this morning PT and OT came in and worked with him together usually they are separate since he cannot sit up or hold his head up they worked with him together. Then speech therapy came in and tried to see if they could get him to swallow they take an Ice pop and break a small piece of it and put it in his mouth to see if the cold reaction would help him swallow you should of seen his face he loved it the therapist asked him if he would like some more and he nodded yes she gave him one more small piece unfortunately she could not give him anymore because he could not swallow but I know he enjoyed the taste. After that he slept for about an hour. When he woke up he gave a big smile to Julia and Ciara when they were talking to him. Later Tom, Jim and Sue came to visit Jim and Sue started talking to him and he gave them a big smile and was feeling good right before they left he started to feel uncomfortable and right now tonight whatever pain he had yesterday is bothering him again tonight hopefully it will go away. Right now the surgery scheduled for Wednesday is tentative we should know tomorrow and will let everyone know. I am not sure if everyone reads any of the post thanks to Peggy Dunne Father Jeff will be celebrating a Healing Mass Friday night October 5th at 8pm and Father Jeff said the intention of the Mass will be for MikeyDs Healing. Everyone is welcome to come and stand before God for MikeyD. We will pray for a complete healing, we will pray for a miracle, we will stand together for MikeyD, it will be in the Mary Mother of God Church, 19 Cherry Tree Farm road.

I hope a lot of you can make it the more the better.

we have had over 40,000.00 hits on the blog around 3000 hits a day I know that is from all over the world a lot from Ireland but it would be nice if a lot of us could attend the healing mass for Little MikeyD.

Saturday night

Little MikeyD had a rough day, he had some kind of pain and because he cannot speak he is not able to tell us what is bothering him. You can see the pain in his face and body. He has not eaten in 15 days because he cannot swallow the only nutrition he has had is through the IV was thinking it could be hunger pains I only wish I knew what was making him uncomfortable. He is also getting frustrated because now that the heavy medication has been reduced he is aware of the fact that he can no longer move his arms or hands so he gets a really scared look on his face and starts to get upset when he tries to move and can't. I never knew it could be this tough to sit and watch your son suffer and not be able to do anything for him. I wish I could do something  this makes you feel totally helpless.

Please Pray for  a miracle for little Mikeyd

Friday Night

MikeyD had another busy day with Speech therapist, occupational therapist and Physical therapist.

unfortunately no more words have been spoken since he said "I want to get out".

Dr, Vetter just left the room a few minutes ago and the Surgery to install the Defibrillator may be delayed we will let everyone know as soon as we know. I imagine the weekend will be quiet and slow so the post will be short, we know for sure that we are in the best Hospital we could be in, here at CHOP and we are sure they will make the right decision on when to do the surgery. In an earlier post we asked everyone who has kids playing sports to get a simple EKG that would be great a simple test could help a lot of kids, as it turns out it would not have helped MikeyD because they still have not found anything wrong with his heart and all his EKG's are good but from being here and meeting a lot of people I know it has saved a lot of kids. Also if anyone knows of anyone who has a child with any kind of cardio issues I would highly recommend you give them the name of Dr Vetter at CHOP and they can call her and set an appointment just say you are a friend of MikeyD. Thursday Night

MikeyD had another busy day they got a special chair for him today called a tilt chair it has a head rest on it and a harness to strap you in. Rebecca from PT sat him in it for about 20 minutes. Unfortunately no more words have been spoken.

We met with the doctors this morning and since they cannot find out what caused this to happen to MikeyD and his heart checks out fine as a precaution they are going to do surgery and install a defibrillator on his heart built into his little body. the unit will be installed under the collar bone and the pads will go right over the heart  just in case. The Surgery is tentatively scheduled for next Wednesday September 26th. the problem right now is that MikeyD has 2 blood clots in his left arm and  Hematology is afraid he will develop more clots the unit requires a tube installed from the heart that carries blood to the defibrillator and since he has a traumatic brain injury neurology said they cannot use blood thinners so right now all the doctors are having meetings trying to figure out how they can work around this there is a risk of him developing more clots if they do  the surgery without the blood thinners. So right now we are in a holding pattern.i know we are in the best hospital we could be in and they will figure it out. We will keep you all up to date.

We would thank the MTPD and the Port Monmouth First Aid for a great job. Tanya from the first aid follows up every day as well as a few from the PD.

Wednesday Night

Today MikeyD had a busy day with doctors and therapist. Not much change and he unfortunately did not speak at all but he did give me a big hug he cannot use his arms yet but he leans into me and give me a big hug with his neck and chin the nurse was touched.

Tonight I would like to give special thanks to 3 groups of special people and Organizations, not sure how many of you heard about the MikeyD Long Distance Shootout competition that was put together for MikeyD's love of the 3 point shot and as a fund raiser for my family. This was put together quickly by the

AWG Christian Fellowship Team

at Brian Hills house by Mike Adamson and Brian Hill and the rest of the AWG team, these guys are a group of the best Christian- sports active father and sons team you could ever meet.
we hung the signed posters in his room tonight thanks Dave Stefanic for making the posters.

I heard the prayer Huddle was AWGsome !!!!!!!!!!!

this was supposed to be real small with the just the AWG group and I heard that 2 other groups heard about the shootout that I need to thank for be big supporters.  

1^st - is MikeyD's Basketball Team I heard you guys came out in full force !!!

I give all of you special thanks to all the kids on the team all your great parents and all of the great Coaches !!!

They have been supporting my family other ways everyday as well as the shootout.

the other is Steve Colantino and Andy Bottari from the New Monmouth Baptist Church Upward basketball program MikeyD played basketball there as well. I cannot thank you guys and your church enough for your very generous donation.

Tuesday Night

Great news MikeyD is resting comfortably today. They have leveled the medication back to a point where his is feeling much better.

The best thing is he spoke to the doctors and nurses today.

he told everybody

 " I want to get out !!!"

It is great he actually put these words together this is another great sign.

that was all he said for today.

Monday Night

MikeyD had a rough day they were taking away all his medication too fast, so they are sedating him once more to bring him down more slowly. He was getting very anxious because he cannot move his arms or tell us whats wrong due to traumatic  brain injury from the amount of time he was down. The doctors were saying even though he got good  CPR  he was out for a long time before the defibrillator brought him back. They still have not found anything wrong with his heart and still do not know what could of caused this to happen. They are still working on that.
today was like one step forward and two steps back.

Day 11 Monday morning

I know this will be hard to believe please read the post from Peggy Dunne from September 16th at 8:29 PM Peggy prayed that little MikeyD would give mom and dad a hug. This morning at 8:59 Maire Julia and Ciara were at breakfast I was sitting by his bedside holding both his hands and whispering in his hear even though he cannot use his hands or arms and he cannot speak I seen him begin to lift his head and shoulder to come to me I helped him up by holding both arms he sat up and lunged forward into my chest and he gave me a big hug.I had not read the Post before that I just read it now. I have 2 doctors and a nurse that were by his bed that witnessed the whole thing.

Dear Peggy Dunne please keep doing what you are doing God is listening to you !!!

Day 10 - Night time

First off, we would like to thank everyone who put together and supported the 3 Point shootout  for MikeyD tonight. We heard it was an amazing event and it was put together so quickly, the AWG group is really spectacular and it was one of the nicest things anyone has ever done for us. We wish we could have been there for the event. Today has been a roller coaster of emotions. MikeyD is having a lot of discomfort coming off all the narcotic medication and it is really painful to watch for the whole family.

Day 10 Sunday Morning

I am sorry we do not have much to post this morning I feel like we are in Limbo right now.

Little MikeyD had a rough night coming off all the Narcotic medication he peaked around 3:30 AM.

he is still not completely off all of the Narcotics they are giving him rescue shots of Morphine every 2 hours. He was moaning very loud this morning and has just fallen back to sleep. The doctors are hoping by tomorrow they will have him off most of the heavy medication. I will post again later today if we make any progress or have any changes.

Day 9 Morning

Saturday morning- The doctors started taking MikeyD off all sedation last night. He is kicking like a mule when he wakes up. He has gained the use of his lower body from the hips down. He does not have use of his arms yet from the attack so he tries to compensate with his legs. He has been trying to get out of bed by throwing his legs over the bars on the side of the bed. He can respond by shaking his head but still cannot talk. We need to pray to God for recovery of his speech, upper body strength, arm movement and control. Thank you for all the thoughts and prayers, it reminds us in hard times that people care and it means a lot to us.

Day 8 night time

The doctors just came around and said that the MRI of the heart did not show any problems.

he now has a blood clot in his left arm but they will not be able to treat it  yet due to the medications that he is on.the breathing machine is off and he just has oxygen so the lungs are improving.

the doctors said they will have to do a Catheterization  next week to take another look at the heart.

Day 8

I am sorry everyone we are still waiting to hear backfrom the heart surgeons,
at this point Mikey D is a medical mystery no one can seem to figure it out.
he did have an PIC line put in today which is a permanent IV line easier and cleaner and he is coming off the breathing machine today.

Day 7 night time

after a long day of testing we spoke to the doctors tonight  and they said they have 4 specialist looking at all the results and hope to have more information in the morning,
as of right now we have no more information.

Day 7

we spoke to the doctors this morning.
they will start the testing at 12 noon they said if they find a problem they will  do Surgery today.

we had a great visit with Bob today he got to see MikeyD before they brought him down for testing.
when Bob Started talking to MikeyD he wiggled his toes for Bob to say Thank you to him it was great !!!
they started 3 scans at noon and we just heard back that the neck and spine came back good just Adema from when he fell.
waiting for the Brain and Heart test now.

Day 6

MikeyD is getting ready for 4 hours of  testing tomorrow to see if they can find anything that could of caused this to happen to his heart, today was just a day of rest hopefully after tomorrow he will be able to come off the breathing machine his lungs are starting to clear up and his Kidneys have improved.we will let everyone know if they find anything tomorrow.

Day 5

Little Mikey D had a setback he is still very sick and is in  ICU he is running a fever has Pneumonia is still on machines to be able to breathe and have blood flow. they told us it would be a roller coaster ride with one day of good news and another day of bad news. MikeyD will need to stay in an induced coma until Thursday and we will see if at that time he is able to go for more testing.

the worst part is as of right now we have no answers as to how or why this happened a lot of testing and blood work has been done he has no infections of the heart and no signs of a heart problem from what has been done so far. Hopefully Mikeyd will be a little better on Thursday for the next round of testing. we will keep you posted thanks again for all your support it is a great comfort to my family. please keep posting.

we are in what is ranked the best Children’s hospital in the USA. Which I believe after being here for a few days is the best Children’s Hospital in the world I know they will find the cause and repair MikeyD’s little heart.

Day 4.

Today was a great day for Mikey. They took him off one of his medications and immediately he started responding he was kicking like crazy. And he was responding to a few questions by shaking his head yes and no! He did so well today and we are all so proud of him! Thank you everyone for all the wonderful comments when Mikey is recovering he will be so happy to read them!
Doctors still not sure how this happened or what caused it after seeing many doctors today and doing some testing more will be done tomorrow.As of right now they will be doing a cardiaac catherization tomorrow to see if the image from the scan today is a damged vessel in the heart caused by the sudden cardiac arrest on Friday  if it is open heart surgery will be needed.

Day 3

Little MikeyD is still in an induced coma the doctors here are waiting for the body to have time to try and heal some of the damge that was done to the heart. they are also trying to figure out what caused it. they beleive it is a condition that happens to young athletes who are very active and in good shape and happens without any warning signs.I am going to enclose a link to a web-site for all parents who have children playing sports to read about for the sake of your children.I have spoken to a few doctors here and they all recomend that if you have children playing sports they recomend you have and EKG done as a safety   they say it does show if there is a chance of something happening from exercise  http://www.parentheartwatch.org/  thanks to all of you for your prayers and support

Day 2

Sat. 9/8 9:30pm We are here with Mikey D at C.H.O.P after a rough afternoon he seems to be resting a little better.He was stable for a majority of the day, however something similar to yesterdays events with his heart occurred once again. He is once again stable, and are keeping a close eye on him.  Although he is an induced coma we know he can hear us so we are passing on all words of encouragement. 

Day 1

On the night on Friday, September 7, 2012 just as basketball practice was finishing Mikey D suffered a severe heart attack. He was Air Lifted to Childrens Hospital Of Philadelphia. Mikey is fighting for his life, he is in an induced coma while they help heal his heart and try and find out what caused this to happen. Mikey really needs your thoughts and prayers right now!!!!!!! Mikey is a strong, sweet kid who loves his sports, video games and most of all his family and friends. We are making this blog to update everyone, and answer any remaining questions. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.
